How do YouTubers call themselves?
One thing we all know for sure is that Internet has changed the world. It has revolutionized the way individuals live, communicate and collaborate. Literally the Internet has turned our existence upside down. Especially changes in social communication are of particular significance. Social networks have already changed the way people act and make decisions, and will continue doing so. With the rise of Youtube, individuals got the opportunity to show themselves without too much hustle. Singers, dancers, gamers, comedians, beauty fans, and others are now able to present themselves and furthermore earn some money with that. Whatever they do on YouTube, there is one question left: How are they called? Or rather how do they call themselves? Is it YouTubers? Artists? Creators?
We started an online survey and asked some YouTubers how they would define their “job title”: ‘Online creator’ was by far most frequently mentioned - by half of the people we asked! Second and third named titles were ‘artist’ and ‘talent’. One said, it depends on the platform and intentions of use he would call himself ‘blogger’, ‘vlogger’ or even ‘influencer’. It was surprising that just one person called himself a ‘YouTuber’, even though people from the outside tend to use that term. One of the questionees called himself ‘Happy Maker’ - probably the cutest answer.
We also wanted to know what their content is about and which social media channels they use. Lifestyle was the number one mentioned and often combined with comedy, beauty, music and/or games. It was interesting to see that online creators were connected to the topic ‘Lifestyle’ while talents and artists were connected to music.
It’s not a big surprise that YouTube and Facebook are the most used social media channels followed by Instagram and Twitter. Short video messages are trending - So this could be an opportunity for online creators to move their content to platforms like Snapchat or Vine.
However they call themselves, creators with many followers online are (mostly) experts on what they’re doing - be it is fashion, beauty, gaming, music, comedy. They use multiple platforms to reach and excite people about their content. In the next years, platforms, creators and their followers will grow and become even more diverse.
